The works comprise the refurbishment of a 3 storey + basement Victorian building in the heart of the historic centre of Greenwich. The building is Grade 2 listed. The project involved the reconfiguration and extension of the restaurant at basement and ground level to provide a modern shell and the reconfiguration and fit out of residential accommodation on the upper floors.
The site has a high potential for the discovery of medieval remains, and consequently the site was visited almost daily whilst the excavation works were being carried out in the rear courtyard. Unfortunately only pieces of old pottery and animal bones were discovered!
We re-used bricks reclaimed from demolishing the outbuildings and used traditional London lime mortar when reinstating them. Internally we preserved existing period features such as fireplaces and coving, and carried out a sympathetic restoration of the original staircase.
